July 23-25 2010: The Winkie Convention.
Join us as we follow IWOC president and convention chairman Angelica Carpenter down the Yellow Brick Road to Fresno, Calif. Highlights include The Fresno State Theatre Arts Department production of Suzan Zeder's, "Time Again in Oz," a musical based on Baum's Ozma of Oz. Zeder joins us to discuss her work.
In a recent addition to the program,British illustrator Graham Rawle, whose reinterpretation of The Wizard of Ozrecently won both Best Illustrated Book and 2009 Book of the Year at the British Book Design Awards, will appear at this first Oz Club event.
Rawle and Zeder join previously announced authors including Michael Cart, John Fricke, Michael Patrick Hearn, Kathleen Krull, Gregory Maguire, Dee Michel, Eric Shanower and Dr. Sally Roesch Wagner. Confirmed speakersAdditional presenters will be announced in response to our call for papers.
The Henry Madden Library will offer Oz exhibits and a Special Collections exhibit on the World's Columbian Exposition of 1893, which attracted L. Frank Baum and W. W. Denslow to Chicago where they later formed the partnership that brought usThe Wonderful Wizard of Oz.
Our co-host is The Arne Nixon Center for the Study of Children’s Literature. The Arne Nixon Center Advocates will sponsor the conference reception. The Fresno Metropolitan Museum will offer a special Ozzy exhibition. Other sponsors include the Fresno Pacific University and the Fresno County Public Library.
Join us for a wonderful Western weekend of Oz. The Forty-Seventh annual IWOC Winkie Convention, chaired by Robert Baum, Great Grandson of Royal Historian of Oz, L. Frank Baum, happens July 23-25, 2010, at the beautiful Asilomar Conference Grounds in Pacific Grove, California.
zThe program honors the publication centennial of The Emerald City of Oz. We will follow L. Frank Baum as he prepared to conclude his series of Oz books with that title, and review the beautiful illustrations created for it by John R. Neill.
- Grant Hayter-Menzies leads an in-depth discussion of The Witches of Oz: Book, Stage and Screen. From Locasta to Tattypoo—from Billie Burke to Idina Menzel—Oz and Ozian witches are sure to enchant!
- Stan Sieler winds up Victor Columbia Edison for a tour through a century of Oz music!
- Atticus Gannaway presents a fascinating introduction to the life and work of the mysterious Frank Kramer, illustrator of Jack Snow’s Oz books!
- Robert Baum and David Maxine take to the sky in an illustrated talk about Baum’s Flying Girl series, also celebrating its hundredth anniversary!
