The Baum Bugle
A Journal of Oz
Autumn 2007 / Vol. 51,
no. 2
The Autumn issue of the Baum
Bugle celebrates the golden anniversaries of the International
Wizard of Oz Club and its official journal with a fond look backward via reminiscences
and photographs of those who contributed to the growth of the Club.
Features
- Founder Justin G. Schiller provides his
heartfelt introductory
remarks from the 2007 Winkie Convention, an event that celebrated fifty
years of the Oz Club.
- Charter member and professional writer
Martin Gardner (who inexplicably found himself identified in the first
issue of the Bugle as "Chairman" of the "Board of
Directors") offers his memories of the Club's earliest years in "How
the Oz Club Started."
- Another charter member, David L.
Greene, served as Editor-in-Chief of the Baum Bugle from
the late 1960s through the mid-1970s. During these formative years, the
Bugle
blossomed from an informal newsletter to a semi-scholarly journal
running to twenty or more pages. David shares his experience with us in
"The Early History of the Baum Bugle."
- "Oz Club Milestones: Fifty Years on the
Road to Oz" traces the evolution of the Club and the Bugle
over the past five decades, accompanied with comments by current and
former Oz Club officers and Bugle editors.
Departments
- "The Oz Bookshelf" includes reviews of
the Hungry Tiger Press edition of The Wish Express by
Ruth Plumly Thompson; Drama! The Four Dorothys by Paul
Ruditis; and the first two issues of the Oz/Wonderland
Chronicles comic series from Buy Me Toys.com.
- "The
Magic Picture" reports on the ceremonies attending the Munchkins'
receipt of their long awaited star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame; the
annual "Autumn at Oz" event on the site of the Land of Oz amusement
park in North Carolina; and the 2007 Winkie Convention.
- One of the earliest known examples of
an Oz-themed political cartoon, from a January 1901 Syracuse (New York) newspaper, is an intriguing
"CuriOzity."
- The Bugle's
regular departments include "Oz & Ends" (a potpourri of the very
latest in Oz news, events, products and publications) and an updated Oz
Calendar.

History
The Baum Bugle, the official journal
of the
International Wizard of Oz Club, first appeared in June 1957 and has
been published continuously
ever since. The Bugle, which is issued three times each year
(Spring, Autumn, and Winter), specializes in popular and scholarly
articles about Oz and its creators, with biographical and critical
studies, and first edition checklists. Research into the people and
places within the Oz books appears frequently. There are also features
on Oz films and stage shows, reviews of new editions of books about Oz
or its authors, and current Oz (or associated) news. The magazine is
illustrated with rare photographs and drawings, and the covers are
usually in full color. Material on the MGM Wizard of Oz movie
appears on a regular basis, and special issues focus on Oz authors,
illustrators, and other themes. Updated bibliographical studies of the
Oz books and other Baum writings are published as new information comes
to light.
